AL-NAKBA

“The Nakba did not begin in 1948. Its origins lie over two centuries ago….”

The Nakba, meaning "the catastrophe" in Arabic, refers to the violent displacement and dispossession of Palestinian Arabs during the 1948 Palestine war and the subsequent ongoing persecution and displacement of Palestinians by Israel. It encompasses the destruction of Palestinian society, the suppression of their culture and identity, and the denial of their political rights and national aspirations, including the right of return for refugees and their descendants.

The below four-part documentary series by Al Jazeera is essential viewing for anyone who wants to understand the Palestinian predicament.

“The tragedy in Palestine is not just a local one; it is a tragedy for the world, because it is an injustice that is a menace to the world’s peace”

Arnold Toynbee, British Historian
